4M Asia: pure-play company Malaysiakini nominated at the Data Journalism Awards 2018

Selected from among 630 entries from 58 countries, pure-play company Malaysiakini has been nominated at the Data Journalism Awards 2018, the biggest data journalism competition in the world.

Malaysiakini (Malaysia today) is an online news portal in English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil. Launched in 1999, it is considered to be one of the most influential independent press agencies in Malaysia.
The website receives over 2.3 million page views every day.

Along with 10 other media organisations, the editorial team took part in one of the components of the 4M Asia project with a view to strengthening its data journalism capabilities during three intensive training courses held between April and October 2017. Malaysiakini's journalists received support as part of an ambitious journalism project devoted to deaths of citizens in Malaysian police custody.

The training in data journalism provided by CFI was an incredible experience.

"We didn't just learn how to create content from raw data. We were able to gain a detailed understanding of how to manage budgets, arrange funding applications and communicate with a view to promoting community involvement." Koh Aun Qi – Malaysiakini

The nomination is in itself a recognition of the remarkable work of Malaysiakini's journalists. The biggest data journalism competition in the world will take place in Lisbon on 31 May.

Malaysiakini has been nominated in the '' Investigation of the year'' category.
