5 Arabic-language newspapers discuss their business models in Morocco

From 11 to 13 June 2015, the 2 nd collective meeting of the project "4M: assisting privately-owned traditional Arabic newspapers in their transition to digital" in Casablanca brought together twelve representatives to reflect on business models.

This project, which has been developed with the support of consultants from La Netscouade,is aimed at assisting privately-owned Arabic-language newspapers with the transition to digital and at developing the sharing of skills, tools, best practices and innovations, while encouraging the emergence of structured professional projects and networks.

The newspapers As-Safir (Lebanon), Akhbar Alyaoum (Morocco), El Khabar (Algeria), Almasry Alyoum (Egypt) et Al GhadAs-Safir (Jordan), came together over three days for workshops on the question of business models.

During the morning sessions, the experts shared their knowledge and experience in relation to the advertising and internet market in the region, measuring and boosting the audience for advertisers, what content is able to generate revenue, relationships between advertising sales houses and media, etc.
Among the experts present in Casablanca: Pierre Boucaud, Jacques Rosselin, media consultants, Sana Sbouai, editor-in-chief of the magazine Inkyfada, Marc Daou (Publicis Liban), Maha Ech-Chefaa (Google Business group Rabat), and more.

The afternoon sessions were collaborative periods promoting discussion and interaction between the members of the programme in the form of creative approaches and role plays. These collective meetings were preceded by the first individual workshop with the web teams from the Moroccan newspaper Akhbar Alyaoum, from 8 to 10 June in Rabat – a workshop devoted more specifically to new writing formats and to innovation in the production and dissemination of information.
