Closure of the Images of Africa Training project

In the wake of two years of support for seven centres providing training in the fields of audiovisual techniques and the cinema in Africa, the directors of the various recipient structures under the Images of Africa Training project met for a review meeting at the ESAV (Visual Arts College) on 18 and 19 April 2016 in Marrakech (Morocco).

Launched in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) in November 2013, " Images of Africa Training" had the aim of assisting the seven sub-Saharan schools providing training in cinema and audiovisual trades to restructure and to pool their management, pedagogy and teaching method expertise and experiences.

Over the two years, this project has helped to train teachers to give a new generation of film-makers and technicians the skills they need to tackle the challenges of cinema in the digital age.

The Marrakech seminar addressed an overview of all training actions offered to school management and directors. This overview highlighted numerous collaborative projects between schools (trainer exchanges, sharing of good practices), and also initiatives born of various subjects taught during training sessions: the setting-up of a pedagogic evaluation system, the training of trainers in Burkina Faso in directing films on mobile phones, the creation of course content on the subject of production direction, etc.

Topics for discussion concerning the future were envisaged, with thoughts turning in particular to consolidating the dynamics of intra-school networks and new teaching disciplines shaped by the advent of the digital and transmedia era.

Lastly, this meeting provided an opportunity to present, to directors of the Festival of African Cinema Schools, the first edition of which is scheduled to take place in September 2016, a Morrocan government initiative supporting pan-African development of the film industry.
