Creation of the Assises Internationales du Journalisme in Tunis

The International Journalism Conference, which each year brings together news/information specialists and the general public in Tours, will decline in Tunis on November 15, 16 and 17, 2018.

This will be a biennial event, the first session of which is to take place at the Cité de la Culture in Tunis. The second session is already scheduled for Autumn 2020, coinciding with the Francophone Heads of State summit, in conjunction with the 39th edition of the Assises de la Presse Francophone.

In close collaboration with publishers and journalists from Africa and the Mediterranean Basin, and also the Tunisian Committee of the Conference, covering Tunisian professional organisations, the Journalism & Citizenship Association and its partners want the meeting to be not only demanding but to stand as a benchmark amongst stakeholders both north and south of the Mediterranean, responding to major current challenges to democracy.
The organisers have decided to invite more than 150 attendees to exchange views from around the Mediterranean, Africa, the European Union and the northern French-speaking area, with a view to formulating specific proposals aimed at promoting quality information in all the participating countries.

The theme for this first edition, following on from the Assises de Tours of last March, will be: Un journalisme utile pour les citoyens [Citizen-friendly journalism].
Special emphasis will be placed on the need for action to promote Media & Information Education. Workshops, lectures, discussions and public meetings will take place in French and Arabic.

The Tunis International Journalism Conference will be organised by Journalism & Citizenship, with Open Media Hub, an EU programme implemented by the Thomson Foundation, CFI (the French media development agency), Union de la Presse francophone Internationale, Reporters sans frontières, and UNESCO (via the EU-supported NET-MED Youth project) with editorial support from AFP and France Médias Monde.
