E-politics: after the revolutions, the elections / 2nd 4M annual meetings, Montpellier - Thursday 21 and Friday 22 June 2012

CFI and its partners are organising the second edition of 4M with participation of over 150 media professionals from France and other countries ringing the Mediterranean (including Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Libya) and elsewhere in the world.

With the growing popularity of this event, CFI is attracting ever more prestigious names

As the main organiser, CFI is extending its partnership with the higher school of journalism ESJ Pro Montpellier and Rue89, also teaming up this time with the Montpellier city council and France 3 Languedoc-Roussillon.

Following on from the revolutions in 2011, 2012 is the election year. From Russia to the United States, from France to Tunisia: in countries with a well-entrenched democratic tradition and others newly embracing it, how do the media cover these political events? Can the web offer a new dimension to democratic debate? What are the most suitable tools for processing news?

The many speakers leading these debates include:
Pierre Haski, Managing Director of the news website Rue89
Andy Carvin, Media Strategy Manager at NPR (National Public Radio, the US state radio)
Wael Abbas, a world-famous Egyptian journalist, blogger and staunch advocate for human rights
Louis Dreyfus, Chairman of the Board for the Le Monde conglomerate
Alexandre Brachet, producer, founder of web producers Upian and director of web-documentaries including (Gaza/Sderot, Prison Valley and Manipulations

The 2-day event will feature four major debates, two plenary sessions and 16 workshops

Topics will include issues such as "Internet: the new Kingmaker? "; "When citizen journalists turn professional: keys to a successful transition " and "The assets and limits ofWeb investigation".

On Friday 22 June, a debate will be open to the public-at the Montpellier city council meeting hall, with a screening on the theme of "The Web and documentaries: covering politics", led by Laurence Creusot, Assistant Chief Editor at France 3 Languedoc-Roussillon.

With contributions from:
Yves Jeuland, documentary filmmaker
Mickaël Delafosse, Deputy Mayor, Montpellier
