The fundamental principles of funding and commercially exploiting television programmes

From 1 July to 10 November 2014, CFI will be providing support and guidance to two of its partner broadcasting corporations – CRTV (Cameroon) and RTI (Côte d'Ivoire) – by giving a series of training courses covering the fundamental principles of funding and commercially exploiting television programmes.

The training courses will focus especially on how to diversify the funding for a stock programme, and how to best exploit both live and pre-recorded programmes. They are principally intended for the production, commercial and marketing departments of the two broadcasting corporations, with the aim being to allow them not only to diversify where they get their funding from for their productions, but also to increase the commercial revenue generated from their live and pre-recorded programmes.

At the end of the training courses, some of the managers at CRTV and RTI will attend DISCOP Africa in Johannesburg, one of the most important international markets for selling programmes on the continent.

This initiative tackles the economic issues that are fundamental to the activities of every company operating in the media sector. By overcoming the constraints of competition, optimising their programme schedules and guaranteeing a long-term revenue stream, broadcasters are able to consolidate their business models and ensure financial independence, and thus editorial independence.
The initiative is also helping to enhance Franco-African business relations, with African broadcasters being encouraged to forge partnerships with French companies.
