Johannesburg: reflecting on film education in Africa

Johannesburg: reflecting on film education in Africa

On 16 and 17 September 2014, AFDA (South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance) welcomed the annual CARA (African branch of CILECT*) conference to Johannesburg.

After these two days of exchange, CFI organised a workshop on the theme of pedagogical education in African film schools.

A good number of people came to AFDA, a benchmark film school in South Africa, to attend this annual meeting of CILECT members. The conference programme consisted of presentations and discussions on film education in Africa. Directors of schools, such as ISMA in Benin, and teaching directors from the beneficiary organisations of the Images of Africa Training Programme (ISCAC, IMAGINE, ISIS, BNFTA, AFDA, NAFTI) came to exchange with their South African counterparts in relation to the development of pedagogy and the transformation of the audiovisual sector in the digital age.

The aim of this meeting was, on the one hand, to encourage academic research in key areas for the vocational film, television and media schools, and, on the other hand, to share ideas and experiences on an international scale, particularly in relation to the theme of education in Africa, with particular focus on the concept of expertise.

Following this conference, CFI brought the seven beneficiary organisations of the Images of Africa Training Programme together at AFDA, from 18 to 20 September. Benefitting from the expertise of the South African school, the participants of this workshop tackled various themes: the development of new programmes adapted to labour market demand and technological developments, the professional integration of students, course assessment policies, etc.

The objective of this workshop was to firmly root the discussions in the reality of professional practice and encourage concerted reflection on pedagogy, in order to give positive momentum to the sharing of experiences.
