Jordan: developing the media together with UNESCO

UNESCO's office in Amman has called in CFI and its partner ESJ Pro Montpellier to run a segment of the European Union-funded "Support to Media in Jordan" 2014 - 2017 project.

The segment that CFI is to implement is in two phases:

the first, implemented with the support of ESJ-PRO, aims to adapt the journalism courses of two major Jordanian universities to developments in the trade of journalism and to new media requirements;
the second aims to enhance the abilities of working journalists by offering professional training courses to enable them to achieve international standards.

In the case of the university segment, two institutions - one state and one non-state - have been selected: Yarmouk University in Irbid and Middle East University in Amman. Their stated objective is to meet international standards and to incorporate UNESCO's curriculum model, especially through the use of practical modules tailored to sector-specific requirements.

As for the professional-training segment, Jordan Media Institute ( JMI) in Amman has been chosen as local partner to analyse needs in Amman and in three other Jordanian towns and cities: Irbid, Maan and Akaba. This examination will lead to the design of a practical-training programme for a total of 200 Jordanian journalists working in the written media, on radio and television, and online.

This ambitious project, programmed over 2016 and 2017, will enable the professional skills of current and future Jordanian journalists to be honed and will enhance the quality of information provided by the media to the population as a whole.
