Launch of the Guinea Health News project

Launch of the Guinea Health News project

The inaugural training course was held from 4 to 16 April 2016 at the Maison de la Presse de Guinée (Guinea Press House), for ten journalists from privately owned radio stations in Conakry.

The course began with an official ceremony, which brought together many important figures including the French Ambassador, the Guinean Communications Minister, the President of the Guinean High Authority for Audiovisual Communication and the Technical Adviser to the Guinean Health Minister, followed by a consultation meeting between the directors of the media outlets involved and various Guinean health professionals, in order to improve the ways in which both sides work together in broadcasting health-related news.

During the workshop, the trainer Sylvie Sargueil, a journalist who specialises in the processing of health-related information within the media, was assisted by two of the six Guinean co-trainers specially trained for the project, Aissatou Barry and Hadiatou Sall. The aim of the course was to improve the ways in which health-related information is processed, by not only strengthening the journalists' specific knowledge in this area (in particular with the support of the NGO Fraternité Médicale Guinée (Guinea Medical Fraternity), one of the project partners), but also enhancing their journalistic abilities.

The work was divided into three broad categories:
- a recap of the fundamental aspects of radio journalism,
- an in-depth look into the factors specific to health journalism,
- and the devising and production of a health-related magazine show.

The next session will run from 16 to 28 May, this time for ten journalists from local radio stations.
