FOCUS N° 21 / NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2009
Reporting on the economy in the DRC
In October 2009, CFI instigated its first "Reporting on the economy and investigative journalism" training workshop for 13 journalists from private TV channels in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Three workshops will be organised in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi between October 2009 and February 2010.
This programme aims to support the development of a well-regulated and professional media sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the aim of making a wealth of different sources of news available to the Congolese people, providing them with a chance to speak out and openly monitor the doings of elected representatives and the government.
By focussing the initiative on the theme of the economy, CFI intends to develop a training process firmly rooted in reality as well as encourage the trainee journalists to focus on crucial issues in the country (development, resource management and the rebuilding of the Congolese economy).
Looking beyond the fostering of professionalism among Congolese journalists, this training course will also develop coverage of economic issues on television and thus improve newscasts.
Backed by its local partners, the Congolese Audiovisual Institute (ICA), the DRC association of private audiovisual companies (ANEAP) and the Congolese women’s media union (UCOFEM), CFI is also encouraging systematic South-South cooperation.
