AFRICA

CONTEXT :

The African broadcasting scene, currently undergoing massive change, varies enormously from country to country. CFI is active in every region of Africa, constantly seeking to strengthen partnerships with public service television networks while supporting rapidly growing private television networks.

PARTNERS:

-  Over the last 15 years, CFI has been more active in Africa than anywhere else in the world. To date, CFI has 64 partner channels, both public and private, in more than 43 different countries.
-  CFI’s primary market is French-speaking Africa: 27 French-language channels take up around 50 hours of programming per month, and this satisfies their core scheduling requirements.
-  African channels in English- and Portuguese-speaking countries are showing increasing interest in CFI’s free programme supply, as the service is able to provide more and more programmes in English or Portuguese, in tune with their needs.

PROGRAMMES:

-  On average, CFI supplies 2,140 hours of programmes to Africa per year, 44.6% of which is broadcast by African channels. This mainly consists of sport, magazine programmes, documentaries, drama, cartoons, French and African origin programmes, in French, English or Portuguese.
-  Demand from channels is consistently high, thanks to CFI’s daily supply of world and Pan-African news, and coverage of major Pan-African and international sporting events.

CONSULTING AND TRAINING:

-  CFI is contributing to the development of local, diversified, production and supporting the professionalization of television networks in an increasingly competitive environment.
-  In 2003, CFI was given the task of coordinating a dedicated development fund, the ‘Fonds de Solidarité Prioritaire’ (FSP), on behalf of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as part of its ‘Plan Images Afrique’ campaign promoting cultural diversity in the African broadcasting sector.
-  CFI is researching viewer expectations in ten African countries, with a view to fine-tuning its programme selection, and helping television networks find out more about their audiences.
