CFI offers its African TV partners a new programme strategy
On 17 and 18 November, CFI organised a meeting with 24 Programme Directors from French-speaking Africa in Cotonou. For the first time, CFI’s TV partners were consulted on all editorial decisions, and the choice of French and African programmes to be made available by CFI will be made jointly.
The following TV channels will be attending this seminar: ORTB (Benin), RTB (Burkina Faso), RTNB (Burundi), CRTV (Cameroon), RTC (Cape Verde), TVCA (Central African Republic), ORTC (Comoros), Télé Congo (Congo Brazzaville), RTNC 1 and 2 (DRC), RTI and TV2 (Côte d’Ivoire), RTD (Djibouti), ETV (Ethiopia), TVM (Madagascar), ORTM (Mali), MBC (Mauritius), TVM (Mauritania), ORTN Télé Sahel and ORTN Tal TV (Niger), RTS (Senegal), SBC (Seychelles), Télé Tchad (Chad) and TVT (Togo).
On the agenda: Presentation of the new offer of programmes (fiction, children’s programmes and documentaries), genre-based workshops, the new policy for African programmes to be made available, discussions on the theme of live performances, the major events scheduled for 2010 (African independence anniversary celebrations and the 2010 FIFA World Cup).
Cooperation to drive and enhance channels
In 2009 CFI made 2,000 hours’ worth of programmes, including 230 hours’ worth of fiction, 150 hours’ worth of children’s programmes and 250 hours’ worth of documentaries available.
During these two days CFI hopes to gain insight into its TV partners’ programming, in order to offer them programmes tailored to their strategy and viewers’ expectations.
When the opportunity arises, CFI will also make sure of backing up this offer with the transfer of skills involving editorial work, programming strategy, stock management and the setup of a purchasing policy.
Thanks to advice from CFI, the programming departments are increasingly professional, making better use of the programmes supplied and attaining greater editorial and financial independence.
Cooperation serving African production
In 2009, CFI invested 50% of its Department for Africa’s acquisitions budget in the form of purchasing or pre-purchasing of programmes produced in Sub-Saharan Africa. These investments, which have been rising steadily over the past several years, help CFI’s African TV partners offer their audiences a growing number of programmes relating to local realities as well as helping independent producers find funding for their projects.
Long-lasting cooperation serving media in the South
For the past 20 years, CFI has been working to develop media in the South. In 2008, CFI trained or supervised 1,500 professionals from the South, calling on 150 top-level experts in often difficult contexts, for around a hundred operations in over 90 countries.
