Towards new ways of digital storytelling

Towards new ways of digital storytelling

Between 5 and 15 March 2018, 11 pure players participating in the Naila project came together in Abidjan for the second part of a training course focusing on web writing and investigative journalism.

Following the session held in Dakar in late January, the 22 beneficiary journalists and chief editors carried on developing the technical and editorial content of their online media.

They were able to hone the technical tools they needed for optimising their websites in terms of indexing and traffic, perfect their live reporting techniques, and go over the rules to be followed for ensuring effective online editions. Part of the week was given over to the fundamental points of fact checking, to solutions journalism and, finally, to podcasts.

The participants also enhanced their skills in different forms of journalism. They worked on reporting and portrait techniques, covering everything from shooting to investigative methods. Exercises carried out on the ground allowed the journalists to put what they had learnt into practice, and gave them the chance to focus on how they could bring their reports to life and showcase them to their intended audience.

The cross-border partnerships are still in place.

Since the start of the Naila project, they have been based on common topics and then taken over by the 11 editorial teams. Following a series of articles focusing on businesswomen in the nine countries, a new topic concentrating of the phenomena of cultural alienation will be launched on 7 May.

Each month, the 11 pure players will publish Le tour d'Afrique, a monthly press review of the best articles, podcasts and videos produced by the editorial teams.
