A forum for combating misinformation in Uzbekistan

In preparation for the Forum of Journalists of Central Asia, due to be held on 6 to 8 May 2024, CFI travelled to Tashkent from 11 to 14 March to take stock of the organisation of this large-scale event, which is set to attract close to 120 participants. 

The importance of ethical journalism in Central Asia

The main objective of the Tashkent Forum is to bring together journalists, media experts and official representatives dealing with the current issues affecting journalism in Central Asia and to strengthen collaboration between them. The forum is run by CFI and the French Embassy in Uzbekistan, in partnership with the French Embassies in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and in collaboration with the Media development Agency of Uzbekistan.

The forum is set to attract as many as 120 participants from France and Central Asia: journalists, representatives from media and academic organisations, media experts and officials, all of whom will be in a position to highlight the crucial issues of misinformation, adaptation to the rapid changes in journalism, as well as security. These phenomena complicate source verification, exacerbate confirmation bias and fuel anti-democratic strategies, underscoring the importance of ethical journalism.

Each of the three days of the forum will be dedicated to a broad theme: misinformation, the challenges posed by digitisation, and security. The final afternoon will be set aside to allow the French and Central Asian participants to network. A combination of plenary sessions, round tables and group work will be used to address a number of topics linked to the broad themes of the forum: journalistic ethics, journalism and artificial intelligence, fact-checking, digital and physical security, etc.
