Applications are open for Voices in Exile, a new support programme for journalists and media professionals in exile

CFI, Reporters Without Borders (RWB), SINGA and the Maison des journalistes (MDJ) are launching Voices in Exile (“Voix en exil”), a new Paris-based project to support journalists and media professionals who have been forced to leave their home countries. This project, backed by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, furthers France’s ambition to become one of the main destinations for journalists and media professionals in exile.

Journalists, media professionals and civil society stakeholders in exile have a key role to play in disseminating reliable information to their fellow citizens who have remained in their home countries, to diasporas and to the rest of the world. Given that conflict situations are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide, we are extremely likely to see a significant increase in the number of journalists and media professionals who are forced to leave their home countries.

The Voices in Exile project will therefore be launched in April 2024, with an initial duration of three years, and aims to:
Ensure the safety of journalists in exile in France;
Offer multi-faceted support to journalists living in exile in France who want to continue working, which includes socio-cultural support, psycho-social support, legal and administrative advice, training to strengthen editorial, managerial and digital skills, and networking;
Help these journalists further their careers and achieve their goals, which includes setting up new media outlets;
Help publicise and create links with existing initiatives to support journalists and media professionals in exile in Europe.

This project will have welcomed and supported four cohorts of 18 beneficiaries by the time it comes to an end in March 2027.

This call for applications is for inclusion in the first project cohort, which will receive support from June 2024 until March 2025 (a six-month support programme followed by a three-month follow-up programme).
