“Ça pique” an online cultural event for young people in Niger

Since 2021, three innovative online media outlets have been receiving technical and financial support from MediaSahel. Following on from Angata in Mali, the focus is now on “Ça pique”, a programme broadcast by Etrane TV, a Nigerien online media outlet.

A programme designed for young people, “Ça pique” is a casual, entertaining, musical and humorous bi-monthly video magazine. These seven-minute programmes, broadcast on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, host various well-known personalities from the artistic, cultural and sporting world and offer young people the opportunity to pose questions to the guests.

In Niger, a form never before seen in Niger the artistic, cultural and sporting spheres have always had a poor reputation. This programme aims to demystify this situation by humanising those involved in these areas. ‘Ça pique’ is unusual as it takes a form never before seen in Niger, hence its originality”, explains Zakari Z, the team’s camera operator and sound recorder.

Interactive, fun and run by a young team, this programme pursues several objectives: to promote talent, to reveal the hidden facets of the people behind that talent, to connect them with the audience and to offer a means of informing and entertaining young people in Niger, while also raising awareness of issues close to its heart.

Having amassed more than 9900 followers on social media (Facebook, Youtube and Instagram), it aims to provide a space for expression and the promotion of young Nigerien talent and to become the benchmark magazine in this field.

The teams are benefiting from tailored feedback on their productions from Inoussa Maïga from Agribussiness TV and Ségolène Malterre from the Pas2Quartier programme shown on France 24. The latter travelled to Niger in December 2021 to provide an in-person coaching session:
I joined the editorial team for a while to create an episode. Several group reflection phases were organised, interspersed with observation phases and in-situ readjustment phases. There was an initial stage devoted to laying down the editorial ambitions of the project. This was followed by another aimed at preparing the week’s shooting, based around a sequence and a list of questions. Overall, we were able to rework the content by devising a new format that builds on the original and gives young people more opportunities to get their voice heard”.
