How do you attract young people to radio? A debate between seven stations in Tunis

On 13-14 March 2014, CFI is organising a seminar in Tunis to bring together seven radio stations from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.

The seminar forms part of the Shabab up! radio projectlaunchedinDecember 2012, which aims to help young people to learn, acquire professional skills and contribute to society by providing support both to journalism colleges providing entry-level training and to independent local radio stations in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.

The assistance given to radio stations aims to promote local and regional news broadcasting as well as the production of interactive programmes presented by young professionals for listeners in the 15-25 age group.
In October 2013, CFI issued a call for applications to every radio broadcaster in the region. Seven were selected to take part in the project: Jil FM in Algiers, Hit Radio in Rabat, Radio Plus Agadir, Sawt el Manajem in Gafsa, Nefzawa in Kebili, Jawhara in Sousse and IFM in Tunis.

The seven stations differ widely in format, legal constitution and resources, but they all have in common a youthful team, an express desire to influence their social and cultural environment and the goal of appealing to younger listeners.
They are all concerned with promoting freedom of expression and pluralist dialogue on the airwaves, on the internet and on social networks.

Most of them also cite "connecting with the community" as a core editorial principle.

On 13-14 March, two researchers from the Maghreb Contemporary Research Institute and a representative from Sofres will present a report on radio and young people (based in particular on a study carried out by TNS Sofres in June 2013 with young listeners from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia).
Six French radio professionals will also share their experiences: Eric Angioletti, the founder of Angiocom, a radio and TV production and advisory company, Giulia Fois, journalist and presenter at Le Mouv' radio, Marie Tartois, co-presenter of a talk radio show on the Skyrock station, David Rofé, a product launch consultant focusing on the media industry, Thomas Plessis, CEO of the Shingumi production and digital advisory agency, and journalist and trainer Pierre-Yves Schneider.
The discussions will focus on talk radio, local news, the use of new media (known as the "second audience") and business models.

The project is financed by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
