Supporting Journalists and Media Organisations in Exile

Supporting Journalists and Media Organisations in Exile

The fifth Forum on Media Organisations in Exile was held in Hamburg on 12 and 13 September, organised by the Körber Stiftung foundation.

The conference covered the development of media outlets in exile and, in particular, media organisations and journalists originally from Russia, Belarus, Iran and Afghanistan, who have been subject to persecution in their country of origin. Particular attention was paid to journalists from Ukraine in their situation as refugees since the start of the large-scale invasion. Powerful and poignant witness accounts were heard, reminding us of the difficulties of exile and the courage of those journalists who, at risk to their lives and those of their families, are fighting to continue to work freely and independently.

Discussions also covered the various types of support that need to be provided to media organisations in exile to allow them to get established successfully, as well as issues of digital and physical security for journalists in exile, who continue to work on sensitive subjects, and their sources.

CFI took part in this event to strengthen its presence within the community of stakeholders supporting media organisations and journalists in exile, to expand its network, participate in discussions and contribute to defining a global action strategy to help them.
