Nkemcha Martin Tiku: “I was eager to discover the link between media literacy and peace”

Nkemcha Martin Tiku is the founder and national coordinator of the organisation Roboga, in southwest Cameroon. As a consequence of the armed conflicts in the southwest and northwest, he has been living as an internally displaced person since 2016. In April 2023, he attended a Talk Peace media literacy workshop.

"It was very exciting to be selected by CFI as a youth leader amongst 12 youths selected in the South-West Region of Cameroon for the Talk Peace training. Despite the excitement, I kept doubting and asking myself how media information literacy is related to a peaceful society. It is on this note that I was so very anxious for the training to discover more about media information literacy and its relationship with peace. I acquired skills on understanding the role and functions of the media and other information providers. Although a daily user of many media platforms, I decided to keep myself at point zero to gain impact.
Upon getting to the training site in Limbe on 18 April 2023, I was amazed by the quality of youth selected in the South-West Region of Cameroon for the training. From different academic and professional backgrounds, they were quite experienced in one field or the other but as to media information literacy, it was a mixture of extremes: below, average and high. As for the training coordinator Jean François Mbia and the two trainers Ernesto Yene and Miss Josepha, they were full of experience in practical training. "

"Within five days, we practically studied topics such as: understanding media, information and sources of information, understanding information disorder, freedom of expression, rights, duties and hate speech. All the training was with a training plan put at our disposal, theoretical training, videos, posters, practical exercises, online hate information search, individual and group presentations and experience sharing. (…)
I acquired skills on understanding the role and functions of the media and other information providers. Assessing information and content from media and other information providers, how young people get informed and misinformed. Sources used by producers of fake news and conspiracy theories. How to ethically communicate knowledge created to an audience with the appropriate form and medium. Posture when faced with misinformation and hate speech."

"The training has boosted my knowledge on media information literacy’s relationship with peace in society and I will keep using it in everything I do to engage, empower and impact my community for sustainable peace."
